APO Meet the Principals

This is your ‘standard’ Meet the musician that everyone gets to do. It’s a bit daunting at first, but luckily Tiana Lyes and JX live helped make it very relaxing. Huge Thanks to Matthias Erdrich (Bass Player in the APO) for playing “Spain” by Chick Corea with me for the vid.

Percussion in Pop Music

A radio “appearance” on Jesse Mulligan’s RNZ show. I lead a playlist of pop music that uses Keyboard Percussion including the Rolling Stones, Frank Zappa, and the Carnivorous Plant Society.

4 on the Floor Disco

The APO loves to do one show a year that highlights a particular Genre of non-classical music. In 2018 it was Disco! I got really into learning about the birth of Disco and the Drum beat. In fact, you can see the Originator of the Beat, Earl Young talk about it here.

RNZ Interview

In 2017, I had the honour of performing Incantations, a Percussion Concerto by the Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. Adrian Hollay from RNZ interviewed me about preparing for this.

RNZ Broadcast of Incantations

You can listen to the live broadcast of the performance here. It’s a really epic piece with beautiful lyricism, incredible tension and some incredibly creative writing for percussion. A huge challenge was the requirement of playing marimba, crotales, and tubular bells within the same melodic line. Holding Chime mallets on the outside of a four mallet grip required a bit of strength as you can imagine!

Level Up with KBB Music

KBB is our local music distributor and they have been immensely supportive of the events I’ve put on through the years. Here’s a brief interview they did to highlight NZ music month.

Piazzolla: L’Histoire du Tango “Cafe 1930”

The APO hosts a series of neighbourhood concerts where a member of the orchestra is asked to program a concert specific to their section. I loved having the chance to perform with my colleagues in this new way. Here is part of the concert with James Fry on clarinet.

The Cafe Morning Show

This was actually a lot of fun to be “on set” for this. I was promoting the APO’s upcoming Harry Potter Concert. There’s nothing musical about this video, I just find it funny.
